It is finished!… and so am I!

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Yes… it is finished, but I am almost dead. After spending a whole day out with my fellow graduating classmates for lunch at Bamiyan, we hung out together the entire afternoon before rushing back to campus for some pictures before being ferried off by Yanagisawa-sensei to Kurasawa-sensei’s place for dinner. I had a great time at the president’s home. In short my day way just filled with good food and great company.

HOWEVER…

Due to the various plans I have on my schedule to day, I had to stay up to finish off my paper for Dr. Franklin. I requested that I would like to revise my paper and I think I did put in the final effort I have on my final paper here at TCU. (Laughs!) It was so funny that I was mentioning it a few times yesterday that I am the last one to have all her work done… even Rajiv cleared all his papers!

Well, I worked on my paper till 3:39am a few hours ago. We got back pretty late from dinner. But instead of working on my paper immediately, this bunny got her treases colored, by herself! Haha… it has been a long time since I colored my hair. A year? And it was pretty difficult with the length I have it now. I looked like a mad woman and attracted quite a bit of attention in the Ofuro.

Now, I am up only after 3 hours of sleep. I totally missed my last day of dishwashing duty. (Bad Bunny!) I feel terrible! But… there is a full schedule in line for today. I have to be at Osumi-san’s place for class at 10am, rush back to campus for chapel as I will be on duty translating for Otosan, grab hold of Sugitani-sensei for some pictures before the faculty today, rush off with Matthew to Uchunomiya-san’s place for English lesson by 2pm, come back on campus again for my final voice lessons at 3.50pm, and then attend choir. Maybe I can squeeze in some time for checking mails, and writing some important ones (but I doubt it). As Seth is away tonight, I will have the final opportunity to teach my Friday evening English lesson with Kevin tonight. (ooh.. better prepare his pay!) Just when I think my day is over, there will be a slumber party tonight with the girls of my course. Woohoo! I am so NOT going to keep my sanity and of course, health!

But, anyways… just in case I won’t be able to blog for the next few days, it is most likely that I might not be able to blog for the next week. Tomorrow is too far in the future, let me deal with this morning first. I better go get ready. Adios!

oh yes… I can’t find my thumb drive. Maybe it is still at the MacLAb… better swing by there to get it.

Un-braided

(Laughs!) I forgot to share with you these. As I was going to the hot-springs, I decided to undo my braids. I also thought it was time for a real hairwash. I normally wash my hair everyday. Even though I did was it with my braids… but I guess I have no such patience. However, I think I look super cute this way too. What do you think? The process of undoing was also a long one… but I can be one really fluffy bunny!Dsc01145

Bye Bye Library

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Today is my last day working at the library. Wow! It has been a year and a semester working there. Someone once told me that it is very difficult to get a job in the campus library and only very few will be chosen. However, I guess for my case it was by sheer luck. I wanted an extra job and a job on campus will be great as I won’t have to travel. Why? Well, funny to mention it… it was because I wanted to save money to visit my ex-boyfriend, J, then. But that never happened. We broke up soon after that. I managed to continue working at the library and the money used was for visiting loved ones. I was lucky enough to be able to pay for my vacations at the end of every semester after that.

My job description? Well, mostly house-keeping and returning the books to the racks. I also moved almost every book in the library to make space for more books. Then, there is always the paper work and book-keeping, cataloguing new books and preparing them for the racks in wrapping etc. I think I was hired because of my bi-lingual ablitiy. I helped make a lot of signs and notices for the library. I even help edit the English Newsletter. What I enjoyed most was being able to offer assistence to English speakers to our library, especially to the ACTS-es Freshmen and visiting guests.

I did my usual Wednesday duty today, and did the closing. Abe-san, 大変お世話になりました!お疲れ様でした!

The Countdown

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Coming back to reality is definitely not easy. Especially to my stress level and food intake.

I had class with Dr. Franklin yesterday (Tuesday), and rushed off to the Inzai City International Friendship Association organized lunch for the graduating students. It is a city council affair which my classmates and I were invovled in during our years here in this community. Since I helped out and conduct English lessons in the nearby vacinity, most of those present were related to my classes.

After that, I came back to campus for a while to sort somethings out at the office. Then, I took the evening off having some Bunny time at IKEA. Well, I had to go get the gift from the graduating students for the school. I was welcomed by the familiar sights, smells, and sounds of IKEA… very much like the one back home! I even had my share of Swedish meatballs. (Laughs!) It is the only place in Japan where I can order a kids meal with no questions asked. Due to the currency rate, the stuff there were dirt cheap! I was tempted to buy almost everything I like, but, due to the upcoming events of the next month… I refrained and just got what I need: the gift to the school, the gifts for my fellow graduating classmates, ok… and a lamp! (couldn’t resist!)

I was lugging the stuff on the trains and back to Chiba New Town station, got on the bus (as it was impossible to cycle with the load that I was carrying). While on the bus waiting for its departure, I checked my phone and found out that the boys wanted to go for dinner. So, I jumped off the bus and walked to Gusto. There, meeting Sunil and Matthew, we had a great dinner catching up, teasing each other… yeah, a weekend not seeing each other is too much. What would happen when I leave?

Today, I will have another end-of-semester/pre-graduation/ore-farewell brunch at Yamato-sensei’s place. The menu: Okonomiyaki. (I had REAL Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki during the weekend… do I really want to have this? I also had Okonomiyaki at Miss Mori’s place last week too…) Hmm, I think I should go prepare now. I might do a little grocery shopping before haeding off for my last day of work at the library. Oh yes, I might need to revise Dr. Franklin’s paper.

There & Back Again

Monday, June 26th, 2006

A long vacation… that is what I need. Nonetheless, being in Yamaguchi, away from campus and my other worries did help a lot. I guess it is true; though one can’t run away from their problems, but, at least, stepping away from all of it for a while do change his/her perception about the matter. Anyways, the rest, relax, and rejuvination do help recharge and refresh a person to face their problems and challenges. Who knows? During that vacation, there might have been more problems that he/she had never imagined before, making the challenges back home seem trivial, or it may work as a preparation for what lies ahead. However, I do hope someone misses me when I was away.

I arrived back from Yamaguchi-Prefecture, far west of Japan’s Honshu Island, about 6pm Monday. I was scheduled to be back earlier, but the JAL carrier that I was supposed to board got struck by lightning during the storm yesterday and my flight was cancelled. Asakura-san and I had to wait at Ube Airport for the next ANA flight at 4.30 to make it back to Tokyo. What an experience! Well, not too bad… everything deserves a first try!

I left Chiba New Town (my campus town) Friday morning, made it to Haneda (Tokyo International Airport in the city. Narita is known as "New Tokyo International Airport). Asakura-san and I left on a super small JAL flight bound west and was picked up by her sister, Kinuko-san, at Ube-Airport about 2. Though it is the rainy season, rain has not hit the dryest region of the country but it did rained the morning of our arrival. We hopped into Kinuko-san’s car and she took us to the nearby park of Ube-city.Dsc01078

At that park… well, there was tonnes to see over there. We were welomes by a lake of swans (no joke… it was really a lake of swans of all colors). We walked around the park enjoying the many art sculptures and seasonal flowers. We even went to the zoo/amusement park to look at the monkeys. On our way back, we went to the coal-mining museum, took a rest by the lake again before making it back to the car. I learned a lot just being there at the park. (1) Asakura-san is paranoid about almost everything and is a claustrophobic. We came across a green snake and I have never seen such a huge reaction from her. She almost cried! (Imagine, this 53 year old who I have taught English to for the past few years…) Then, when we were at the pond of irises, a cat fished jumped up at our feet and sent her screaming. Later, when we were at the coal-mine museum, Kinuko-san had to reassure her that the simulator coal tunnel had a proper exit. During our ride on the elevator to the observation deck of the same building, Asakura-san kept complaining that it was going too slow and that she would rather take the stairs. But since the stairwell was locked, and it was too high for her, we took the elevator down with another episode of her whinning.

Dsc01163We travelled back to Kinuko-san’s place at Chofu city and went to the supermarket to get some fresh sashimi. As west Japan is famous for fish, I had sushi and sashimi for almost every meal! Kuniko-san’s place was magnificent. Well, I heard that the land was cheap in Yamaguchi, but her home was built and decorated to a traditional Japanese home with a modern touch. I was given the guest room that was a breath-taking Japanese tatami room that was so huge! Asakura-san slept next door. I later found out that Asakura-san was from a quite well to do family, and her sister was married to a CEO of a pharmaceutical company.

Well, the rest of my stay in Yamaguchi was wonderful. I went to Ten-man-gu of Chofu City, one of the major shrines where people go for prayers and blessings to pass important entrance exams of schools, universities, and companies. There, I also managed to have a look at a traditional Japanese Tea House with an adjacent garden. It was beautiful. We then took a train to meet Kuniko’s husband at Tokuyama city for lunch, REAL Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki. It was SO good. There, he drove us all the way to Hiroshima-prefecture and I visited one of the 3 famous sights in Japan. We went to Miyajima and I was so touched that tears almost welled up my eyes. That island is magnificent and houses the famous shrine that has been visited by very important people since long time ago… maybe the Hei-An period? Well, that island is a "TemDsc01102ple Island" as its name suggests. It is famous for maple leaves and trees, and is a great sight to visit during autumn. The island is also famous for its deers and we saw them almost everywhere. Some of them are even terrorizing the tourists! The most bizzare thing that it was famous for apart from its pagoda and "a thousand tatami-matted grand hall," the island houses the world’s herritage–amongst the temples and other historical buildings–the world’s largest rice scoop! We spent almost the whole afternoon there and couldn’t make it to Hiroshima Dome to see the Atomic Bomb Museum. Nonetheless, I really appreicated everything that was done and had a great time. We even stopped by one of Japan’s most famous bridges, Kintai-Bridge. There we walked to a park where we can see a castle built on top of a mountain. Nearby, there was a sculpture of Sasaki Kojiro. He is the arch-enemy of Miayamoto Musashi (if you have read that book).

On Sunday, we drove to Akiyoshi to see its famous cave and plateau. There, I found out how was it like to be with a 53 year old claustrophobic in the caves. Hmm… interesting. We didn’t manage to see all of the caves due to the heavy rain the season brought filled the rivers with water that the underflow in the caves flooded some of the paths. As we had bad weather the whole day, we didn’t get to see much of the natural craters and sink-holes of the plateau during our drive too. However, I did manage to geDsc01156t myself a tea-bowl, Hagi-yaki, a famous kind of pottery in Japan that is from Yamaguchi-prefecture, even though we didn’t make it to the town itself. It will be my family treasure. We visited the St. Francis Xavier Church too. Though it was totally burnt down sometime ago, they had it rebuilt and it still houses the relic of a bone from the saint’s finger of his right hand. (I don’t think I remember seeing it.)

Due to time constraint, we drove back to Chofu and shopped for dinner after our trip to the hot-springs. I really was able to relax myself at the sauna, out door baths, etc. That evening, Kinuko’s husband and herself, prepared a magnificent dinner of sashimi and home cooked delicacies… some wild bamboo shoots which they cut from the mountains of Akiyoshi when Asakura-san and I was having a look at the caves. Mr. Yanagi is a very kind, loving, and interesting man. Not to forget how humorous he was. I really had a great time with them. I even learned a new culinary delight! A cure for those who do not like melon and/or brandy… simply mixed them together as a punch and you will be happily enjoying it! We enjoyed the evening over good food, beer, french wine, and great company!

Time flew when you are enjoying yourself. Soon it was Monday and I have to get back to Tokyo and my "problems." That’s all about my trip to Yamaguchi. I will upload pictures soon. Stay tuned!

Leave of Absence

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

I am so going to get it… I have still yet to complete my paper for Dr. Franklin, and I leave in 2 and a half hours.

Hmm, I wonder how many people out there who actually reas my blog? Well, this is the notice of my leave of absence. I will be heading west for Yamaguchi today, so, possibly, no blogging for the next few days. I will be back Monday evening. Till then, behave yourselves.

Have a great weekend!

Oops I Did it Again!

Seriously, Suemae, aren’t you supposed to be working on your paper for Dr. Franklin?

But… it was a slumber party. That is what girls do! We braid hair and had brownies, chatting all night away with music and all… Well, I will work on my paper tonight, after dinner with Miss Mori.

[Well, we all need some fun in life. After all, I am finally taking actions to what my baby sister always suggested me to do... so, what do you think, Su-Anne?]

Hey… apart from the “oohs” and “wahhs,” I had many “かっこいい!” “cool!” “sweet” “I didn’t know you are black!” “Man! your scalp is so white!” (Mark said that I need to put make up on that or get a tan.] I got some other wierd compliments too. Another one added to my list of look alikes. Today, I am Alicia Keys! The Japanese Freshmen were absolutely adorable in their responses. I also had envious stares and comments from Wato and Sunil.

(big simles in appreciation) Thanks Masako, for being so patient! We did this for close to 3 hours and I was falling asleep while she tightly braided my hair. Man! I have a freaking white scalp… yeah… I am white. After living in Asia for the years I have been, I have become Asian. [Yada, yada, yada...]Dsc01068

oh.. and Kevin shaved off his Mohawk after being stopped by a cop last night.

Wednesday, June 21

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

I am exhausted! Man! I really wonder, without the help of God Almighty, days like this is simply impossible!

Being a good girl (well, time pressure is a factor too), I finished my term paper for Inagaki-sensei for his class on Science and Religion last night. Techinically, I was done at the wee hours of this morning, 2am, I think. Even though I know I had to get my kimono sewn before wearing it today, I was too tired and sleepy to work on it. I got up 5 hours later and started sweing on the silk colar before preparing myself to help out with Yamato-sensei’s class this morning.
Dsc01038

Yep… this is one bunny seriously crazy (or is it the other way round… crazily serious[?]) about Japanese culture. I might have mentioned it before, I am pretty invovled in Japanese Tea Ceremony. Last month, (or was it April?) I totally blew my budget buying a kimono and was practicing how to put it on by myself. Yeah, call me crazy… but I guess I have talent for such craziness. But, I have to admit… I do look really good in a kimono!
Dsc01040

Anyways, I was busy helping out Yamato-sensei that I didn’t have time to check my emails or phone this morning until Ogawa-san, the school’s secretary, left an email and message on my cell phone informing me that Mr. F will be on campus today. That was one really serious meeting I really didn’t want to miss. So, after getting the message, you could see a crazy bunny dashing across the courtyard in the academic zone in my kimono. (I think I am jinxed that everytime I do dress up nice, there is some stunt that I have to perform.) I just made it to have a brief chat with Mr. F and his father. It was pleasant… fingers crossed for a better near future! However, meeting a business V.I.P in a kimono???

I returned to the class to find that I was done helping Yamato-sensei and went to Preaching class with my usual international classmates (in my kimono). After class, we planned to go out for lunch as it is the final class that we will be having Dr. Peterson with the Senior class. I dashed back to the dorms, changed into my regular clothes, jumped on my bike and cycled off to the restaurant. We had a great lunch, highlighted by the superb company… however, my kimono and its stuff are strewn all over my room even as I am writing this. I rushed to get some stuff for my slumber party with Masako at the 100yen store… she is going to do my hair.

I was late for my part-time job at the library so I have yet to go back to my place to clean up. Right after I was done, I am so tired even to chew that I am not having dinner but came to check my email and blog. I have to be off to meet with Rumi now. (sigh!) my room will still be in a total mess when Masako comes over tonight. Hmm… I wonder when will I actually get some work done tonight?

Doomed Bunny (>_<)

Monday, June 19th, 2006

wait… Hmm, I think this title is over used… but, yeah… it pretty much depicts the situation that I am often in. (sigh!)

DIE!!! This is the final week for me to submit in my papers and I have yet to seriously work on any of them. Even though I had a free day yesterday, I spent the entire morning at Osumi-san’s place discussing with her about religions and other things till around 1pm. I went to the travel agency to get some information about daily tours for my mom, and then zipped off to the post office to check the currency exchange rates. After returnin to campus, Sunil wanted me to do his hair (that was where my time went!). We first tried cornrows but since i suck terribly at it, we did braids instead. Anyways, that took the entire afternoon and I was only done in the evening. Oh no! I seriously have to work on my two papers.

There is nothing much today apart from translation for Okasan at Chapel, class with Yamato-sensei, and in the evening, Japanese Tea Ceremony practice with Yamaguchi-sensei. I do hope to get some work done. I need to sew my colar on my kimono for tomorrow’s Eastern Thought class for the Japanese students. (I am helping out and skipping Preaching Class for that). Wednesday will start off as mentioned and then off to lunch with Dr. Peterson as it will be our last class and time together. I have work at the library (hmm, maybe I will skip that) and then meet Rumi for Chinese lessons. Masako said that she might want to come over to spend the night… (man! When will I really get to work on my papers?) I will have class with Dr. Franklin over the internet Thursday morning, and go meet my student with Ruth in the afternoon, and later class with Inagaki-sensei. In the evening I am still undecisive whether to attend prayer meeting or the possible dinner with Mori-san.

Why am I stressed out about my papers? Simply because I need to submit them by this week in order for professors to grade them and vote for me to graduate the next faculty meeting on the 28th. (I know, I have posted my graduation pictures online WAY before the actual thing… thick skinned, eh?) Anyways, I am panicking at the moment due to the fact that I will be away from Friday to Monday next. It is a vacation for myself. I will be flying to Yamaguchi-Prefecture, way west of Japan.

So… work bunny, work!!! (whip lash!) otherwise… you will be doomed!

On the Edge of Sanity

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

What do you would you do on a Saturday so stuffy and humid that makes you not wanting to do anything at all? Guess what bunny will go for…

1. Be a good girl–doing her laundry that has been piled up for 2 weeks.
2. Be a “better” girl–tidy, clean and vacuum her room.
3. Go hang out with buddies–the insane ones.
4. Go take “purikura” (sticker shots) to brighten up her mood.
5. Give your friend a mohawk.

The answer is…

(drum roll…)

ALL OF THE ABOVE!!! yep.. you got it right.
